Garage EPoxy Floor Coating FAQs

If you are contemplating covering your garage flooring with some type of coating which is great to look at and can offer unsurpassed safety then you need to look into an epoxy coating. As long as the current floor surface is sound, you can apply this coating over any other flooring you may have now.

For example, if you have the old style of asbestos floor tiles which were very common thirty or forty years ago, you can just seal them off with the epoxy covering. This is much more cost and time effective than removing the tiles. Since these tiles are made of asbestos you will need to follow all the asbestos abatement rules which include bagging all refuse and shipping it to a hazard waste land fill. This can get very expensive.

If your floor already has paint on it then be sure there are no loose chips. If you try to coat over loose materials then the epoxy will not bond and will tend to peel up. As long as the surface is sound, clean and degreased you can apply the coating with a roller in a thick coat and smooth out many imperfections, cracks, and low spots.

Another great aspect of epoxy is the quick curing time. Once the resin and the hardener are mixed together, the cure process starts in about ten minutes. Within in 18 to 24 hours you can walk on the floor and you may be able to park your car back in the garage within about three days. A space heater can speed the curing process up by increasing the temperature in the garage and decreasing the relative humidity. If you live in a hot climate, you will want to wait about a week before driving on the surface as the hot tires may actually lift the epoxy off of the floor.

Epoxy Floor Coatings

One of the best ways to be sure you have everything you need is to purchase an epoxy kit from a home improvement or hardware store. These are sold by the size of the area they will coat so it is easy to determine how many kits you need for your particular size garage. I would recommend buying an extra kit or two just in case you need more in the middle of the project. You can always return what you don't use as long as the package has not been opened. The only thing the kit will not include is a degreaser. This must be purchased separately and should be used if you have any oil stains on the surface of your garage floor.
